The past few weeks have certainly been interesting, haven’t they? Zootopia 2 released, broke records left and right, and now has reached such cultural prominence that massive newspapers like the New York Times are having to dive into the question “What’s this ‘Wildehopps’ thing we keep hearing about?”.
Yes indeed, the NYT has just released an article by Esther Zuckerman titled Fans Are Obsessed With This Celebrity Couple. They Star in ‘Zootopia’. To her credit, she does an excellent job giving an overview of the Zootopia fandom, featuring quotes from popular content creators Aisha Rae (“Why It’s OK to be attracted to Nick Wilde“) and Mauricio Velazco (Aka Browntable Entertainment, creator of Return to Zootopia).
Esther did reach out to us for comment, but sadly we missed her email. (Side note, if you want to contact ZNN with any business and media inquiries, use Andy.Lagopus@Zootopianewsnetwork.com. I personally check that one every day.) She was kind enough to reference ZNN in her article though! She also got something correct that most reporters don’t- that the Zootopia fandom is separate from the furry fandom! There’s a lot of crossover, sure, but they’re two different bubbles on a venn diagram.
She goes on to discuss Wildehopps as a phenomenon, and break down why people love it so much. It’s a very good read, and worth your time, so check out the original article HERE
